Mexico City — Global resins and foam maker Greiner Group says a company production facility in Apodaca, near Monterrey, northern Mexico, was undamaged by fire which destroyed a neighboring warehouse on February 21.
"I can confirm there was a fire on Friday, 21st February, at the Greiner Assistec warehouse in Monterrey. The fire has been brought under control by the local fire brigade. Nobody was injured. The production site was not affected by the fire," a spokeswoman at Greiner's head office in Kremsmünster, Austria, told Plastics News in an email.
A spokesman for the Nuevo León fire department said the blaze, which started at about 8:30 a.m. local time, gutted the warehouse and impacted Greiner Assistec only. "No other companies were involved," he said in a telephone interview.
According to the Greiner spokeswoman, the Apodaca facility opened in 2010.
"We are currently assessing the extent of the damage. [An] investigation into the causes of the fire is ongoing by the local authorities," she said.
The municipality of Apodaca is a dozen miles from Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo León state, a manufacturing hub.
Greiner, a family-owned company, supplies the packaging, furniture, medical and automotive industries primarily and has 130 facilities of one kind or another worldwide, according to its website. Annual sales amount to $1.5 billion.
It was founded in 1868 in Germany to produce cork before moving into plastic resin and foam production in the 20th century.
