Hoya Optical Labs of America Inc. is closing a plastics lens plant in Plymouth, Ind., in a move that will eliminate 83 jobs.
Employees were told of the closing on Aug. 6, the same date that the firm sent a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. No reason for the plant closing was cited in the notice.
Hoya also has contacted unions that represent workers at the site, Bruce Scott, safety prescription vice president, said in the notice. The first round of job cuts will take place on October 4, with full plant closure set for March 2. Work done in Plymouth will be transferred to other Hoya sites, Scott added.
Hoya Optical Labs is a unit of Lewisville, Texas-based Hoya Vision Care North America. Both of those businesses are owned by Hoya Vision Care Co. of Bangkok.
