Ineos Styrolution, part of UK chemical giant Ineos, has broken ground on a new 100-kilotonnes-per-annum (ktpa) acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) plant in Bayport, Texas.
Set for operation by 2021, the new site is part of a bigger expansion plan for the Americas, which includes increased acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) capacity at the Altamira site in Mexico, and transferring ASA production to the new site in Bayport.
The new site, adjacent to Styrolution’s styrene monomer plant, was selected based upon its easy access to raw materials, low cost utilities and proximity to major customer markets, the styrenics specialist announced Aug. 9.
The unit, said Alexander Glueck, president Americas at Ineos Styrolution, will be “the most efficient dedicated ASA plant in the world,” although he provided no further details.
“ASA is a versatile high performance styrenic resin. Its properties make it the material of choice for numerous outdoor applications… [including] automotive and construction,” he said during the ground-breaking ceremony.
The planned investment is part of the company’s commitment to its “triple shift” growth strategy focusing on key industries, ABS and specialties and on growth markets.
The capacity increase in Bayport and in Altamira will reduces Styrolution’s need to import volumes from other regions, allowing for more localized supply.
The investment will also free up volumes to further expand business other producing regions EMEA and APAC.
