St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Jabil Inc. opened its new health care manufacturing facility in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with 60,000 square feet of manufacturing.
The facility has 36,000 square feet of clean room space and more than 400 employees, which Jabil expects to grow by 250 by the summer of 2021, an April 27 news release said.
The company manufactures medical and diagnostic devices at the facility, including point-of-care molecular diagnostic devices to detect COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
Construction on the new site began in 2019 and was officially operational in February 2021, Michelle Smith, vice president of communications and brand strategy at Jabil, said in an email.
"Jabil's presence in the Dominican Republic began in September 2018 with the opening of our shared services office," Steve Borges, executive vice president and CEO of Jabil Regulated Industries, said in the release. "Our decision to open and grow our manufacturing operations in the Dominican Republic is in large part due to the high-caliber talent pool and pride of work shown by employees in the island."
Jabil has 260,000 employees across 100 locations in 30 countries and provides technical and design capabilities, supply chain and global product management insights. The Jabil Healthcare unit, formerly Nypro Inc., ranks No. 7 in Plastics News' survey of North American injection molders with estimated sales of $750 million.
