Injection molder Autronic Plastics Inc. has invested $4 million to expand its facility in Central Islip, N.Y., on Long Island, creating 21 new jobs in the area.
"The new facility in Central Islip is equipped with ... infrastructure and equipment, which will enable long-term economic success and growth," Michael Lax, CEO of API, said in a news release.
The 100,000-square-foot facility features injection molding, tooling, product assembly and design engineering, the release said. It currently employs 106 people.
API did not respond to requests for comment by Plastics News.
The company relocated its operations to Islip from Westbury, N.Y., in 2014.
"After Superstorm Sandy, our company needed to consolidate operations in Westbury and North Carolina to meet production demands and new growth," Lax said in the release.
API is receiving subsidized energy from the state's ReCharge NY program, which it first became involved with in 2013, the release said. It also received $1 million over the last five years from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to develop energy efficiency technology for use in subway platform lighting, a subway tunnel maintenance lighting system and lighting for construction sites.
"Our decision to stay on Long Island was greatly influenced by incentives such as ReCharge NY," Lax added.
The New York Power Authority is using API's technology in a project with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to install portable subway lighting in the New York subway system.
