West Columbia, S.C.-based Marwin Co., a manufacturer of wood and metal stairs and doors, has acquired Troy, Ala.-based HB&G Building Products Inc., a manufacturer of plastic porch columns, pergolas, trellises and millwork accessories.
After 74 years of focus on attic stairways and specialty doors, Marwin is diversifying its product offering for the hot outdoor living market with HB&G's fiberglass and PVC columns and pergolas, fiberglass trellises, urethane balustrade systems and decorative polyurethane porch brackets and ceilings.
HB&G President Lance Servais and his team will transition to Marwin, according to Matt Kaufman, a managing partner at the Boca Raton, Fla.-based private equity firm Validor Capital, which bought Marwin from family owners in 2017.
Validor provides liquidity to family and founder-owned industrial, manufacturing and service businesses in the lower middle market. The firm seeks acquisitions that can leverage combined expertise and deep industry relationships.
HB&G is Marwin's third acquisition this year. In March, the company bought Collegeville, Pa.-based SS Industries, which makes spiral staircases and recently expanded into sliding barn doors, and in July it was Tampa, Fla.-based Millwork 360 LLC, which makes custom mouldings and doors for interior and exterior use.
HB&G's website and a news release about the acquisition both say it is the largest manufacturer of front porch columns and other outdoor living products.
"HB&G expands our product offering and our channels to market, which should enhance the performance of all of the companies," Kaufman said in the release.
The HB&G website says it has been creating products like columns for traditional American front porches for families to relax and welcome visitors since the 1880s.
HB&G's Servais said Marwin is a good ft.
"The Marwin Co.'s focus on building products is in alignment with our goal to grow our participation in the market through investments in innovative building product solutions," Servais said.
Validor also has invested in American Stairways Inc., Bico Steel, Boehm Pressed Steel and Edsco Fasteners LLC.
