Through a partnership with Plastic Bank, the Method brand of cleaning products is now using recycled "coastal plastic" for clear bottles in North America.
Method, owned by SC Johnson & Son Inc., said consumers can now buy gel hand wash, foaming hand wash, all-purpose cleaner, dish soap, foaming tub and tile cleaner and laundry detergent packaged in the recovered plastics.
"Recycled recovered coastal plastic is plastic that has been collected on land, within 31 miles (50 kilometers) of the coast, to stop it from ending up in the ocean or a landfill," the company said.
SC Johnson has worked with Plastic Bank since 2018 to create more than 550 plastic collection locations in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Brazil. Those gathering discarded plastics take their material to these collection sites for payment.
"Our partnership with SC Johnson is more than just a collaboration. It's a rallying call to businesses worldwide to step up to end poverty and stop plastic pollution. We believe that collective, incremental efforts ignite sweeping transformations. No matter how big the global waste footprint is, every step we take together for the good of our people and the planet counts," David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank, said.
Method initially started using coastal plastic for limited edition hand soap and dish soap bottles.
Plastic Bank and SC Johnson, which acquired Method in 2017, claims to have recovered the equivalent of 3 billion bottles to date.
The use of coastal plastics for PET in North America does not include closures, triggers or the company's Stain + Odor Treatment variety.
