Compounder and concentrate maker Modern Dispersions Inc. has added capacity at its production sites in Massachusetts and Georgia.
In Fitzgerald, Ga., MDI has added a 133-millimeter twin-screw extruder and ancillary equipment to make engineered compounds and masterbatch concentrates, officials said in a recent news release. The expansion is set to come on line early next year.
The new capacity is in response to strong growth in markets including automotive, electrical components and electronics packaging, officials added.
"The new line gives us more flexibility, reduced lead times, and allows us to remain cost competitive as we strive to meet the supply needs of our customers," Sales and Marketing Vice President Jan Kozma said in the release. MDI also will add more capacity for polyolefin-based black masterbatch concentrates early next year.
In Leominster, Mass., where MDI is based, the firm has installed a 50-mm Steer twin-screw extruder for a new pilot line. The line will help the company develop engineering plastics formulations for nylon, polycarbonate and PET resins, officials said. It will also support initial scale-up and preproduction needs.
MDI serves a global client list in the pipe, wire and cable, film and compounding markets. The firm's products include carbon black masterbatch concentrates, white concentrates and specialty additive compounds.
MDI was founded in 1967 by Janos (John) Kozma, Jan's father, who remains chairman of the firm at age 81. His two other sons also work for MDI: Marton as president and Gabor as purchasing vice president.
