Mike Levy, a longtime plastics industry trade association executive, died Feb. 25 in Sacramento, Calif. He was 76.
Levy worked for the American Chemistry Council in its plastics division in Washington from 1994 to 2018, when he left to become market area director for First Environment Inc. in Sacramento, specializing in life cycle analysis and greenhouse gas emissions work.
Earlier in his career, he worked for ExxonMobil Chemical Co. as a manager of legislative and regulatory affairs from 1979 to 1992. He established the Washington office for environmental consulting firm Franklin Associates Ltd. in 1992.
An obituary in the Times Herald-Record newspaper in Middletown, N.Y., said Levy applied his knowledge in life cycle analysis throughout his career, receiving the Rita Schenck Lifetime Individual LCA Leadership Award in 2021 from the American Center for Life Cycle Assessments.
"Mike successfully integrated his 30 plus years of experience as an accomplished chemical/plastic executive, and life cycle expert, best seen while working and advising government and trade associations," the obituary said.
At ACC, he served in leadership roles in the Plastics Foodservice Packaging Group, working on opposition to expanded polystyrene bans, managing polymer LCA databases and on developing recycling technology.
Colleagues at ACC said he will be remembered as a kind-hearted mentor who was widely known in the industry.
Levy was born in Newburgh, N.Y., and earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Survivors include a former wife, Judith; two sons, Matthew and Andrew, and a daughter-in-law Kelly; a sister Robin and other family members.
