Mexico City — Food grade recycler PetStar SAPI de CV says its PetStar Reborn product has become the world's first recycled PET to achieve Cradle to Cradle certification.
The Mexican company features on the website www.c2ccertified.org of the Oakland, Calif.-based Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, which is dedicated to making products "in fundamentally better ways."
Founded in 2006 by Jaime Cámara Creixell and headquartered in Mexico City, PetStar operates what it describes as the largest food grade PET recycling plant in the world in Lerma, 30 miles southwest of the Mexican capital.
Coca-Cola México and six bottlers have owned the company since 2011 and Cámara is its CEO.
In a news release sent to Plastics News May 27, PetStar said PetStar Reborn is "a clear example of a circular economy." According to PetStar, the company produces 112.5 million pounds of the Reborn resin a year after recycling 3.1 billion bottles, collected at eight different facilities.
The Ciel water brand's blue bottle is made totally of PetStar Reborn resin, PetStar said.
William McDonough and Michael Braungart founded the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, a non-profit organization, in 2010.
