Sheet leader Plaskolite LLC is permanently closing two facilities in Sheffield, Mass., that it acquired from Covestro in 2018.
In a WARN notice filed with the state, officials with Columbus, Ohio-based Plaskolite said the Sheffield operations employed 90 people.
The plant and warehouse are being closed "based on the opportunity to consolidate operational redundancies and optimize production within our existing and unused manufacturing footprint," according to the Oct. 29 letter.
The letter added that the closing will allow the firm "to concentrate needed capital investments for maintaining our high health and safety standards for our production staff [and to] reduce logistics between production locations and our logistics centers."
Work done in Sheffield will move to Plaskolite plants in Ohio. The closings will start in the second quarter of 2025 and are expected to take a year to complete.
All Sheffield employees will be offered an opportunity to relocate with company assistance to another facility.
"We expect a number of employees to relocate their position to another Plaskolite facility," officials said.
Plaskolite was founded in 1950 as a maker of drinking straws but by 1962 was focused on thermoplastic sheet manufacturing. The 2018 purchase of the Covestro sheet business gave Plaskolite a strong position in polycarbonate sheet. At the time, Covestro said the business had annual sales of around $170 million.
Plaskolite has been majority owned by Chicago-based investment firm Pritzker Private Capital since 2018.
Based on sales, Plaskolite is North America's 12th-largest film and sheet maker in Plastics News' ranking. The firm has annual estimated sales of $740 million.
Plaskolite has made 23 acquisitions in the last 17 years, most recently buying the Vycom sheet business of Azek Co. Inc. for $140 million in late 2023.
