The official the podiums for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 medal award ceremonies were unveiled June 3.
In a world first, the podiums have been manufactured from post-use recycled plastic contributed by the public and recovered from the oceans as part of the Tokyo 2020 Podium Project. The project kicked off in Tokyo in June 2020.
Collection boxes for used plastics were made available in over 2,000 outlets of the Japanese retailer AEON. The collected plastics was forwarded to Procter & Gamble, the partner of Tokyo 2020 on the Podium Project. P&G also collected and donated plastic waste recovered from the oceans. Each of the 98 podiums was created with 3D printing technology using the collected plastic.
Procter & Gamble, the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, and the International Olympics Committee were present at the unveiling event.
After the Games, the plastic will be recycled back into packaging for P&G products. It will also be used for educational purposes to promote the Olympic Movement’s role in the area of sustainability.
