Thermoformer Placon Corp. is expanding at two locations, including the company's headquarters in Madison, Wis.
"The move to expand production comes in the wake of growing demand for the company's stock and custom thermoformed packaging in the medical, food and retail markets," Placon said in announcing the projects.
Along with work in Madison, the company also is expanding in Plymouth, Minn.
"The newly added capacity at the Plymouth facility will allow Placon to increase production of the company's popular line of Fresh 'N Clear catering trays and lids," the company said.
The Madison expansion includes the installation of two new thermoforming machines to be used to increase production of post-consumer recycled PET food and retail packaging. The Plymouth expansion involves “a thermoforming machine and production line” for the catering line, the company said. Both locations are adding jobs.
"With customers increasingly looking for more sustainable plastic packaging options, our expanded production capacity allows us to meet growing consumer demand for our food and retail product lines," said Scott Newton, sales director for custom food and retail.
Placon ranks No. 17 in the latest Plastics News list of the largest thermoformers in North America with estimated sales of $210 million. Along with the facilities in Plymouth and Madison, the company also has manufacturing sites in West Springfield, Mass, and Elkhart, Ind.
The move to expand in both Minnesota and Wisconsin comes about five months after Placon decided to close a plant in Wilson, N.C., following a drop in revenue for the company. Placon had acquired the Wilson site from Sonoco Products Co. in 2021.
