Somerset, Wis.-based SMC Ltd., which manufactures products for the medical, diagnostics and pharmaceutical markets, is expanding its manufacturing facility in Costa Rica by about 60,000 square feet, doubling the size of the facility.
The expansion in Alajuela, near the capital of San Jose, will allow for additional clean room molding and contract manufacturing capacity, an April 5 news release said.
"SMC has seen tremendous growth in Costa Rica, both in technological capabilities and our people development," Bob Stoesser, SMC vice president, said in the release. "This is our third expansion in 10 years and shows our commitment to Costa Rica, its people and community.
"We are well positioned to continue our growth path in Costa Rica and our technical manufacturing capabilities," Stoesser added. "This development and growth is a very big benefit for our Costa Rica community as well as our local and export customer base."
The company declined to comment on the cost of the expansion.
SMC currently employs more than 200 in Costa Rica and expects to double that with the new expansion, the release said.
The contract manufacturer, with other locations in California, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Ohio, the United Kingdom and India, plans to increase its offerings, including assembly, injection molding and secondary operations, it said.
It also offers design, finished device thermoplastic molding, liquid injection molding, micro molding, and kitting and packaging of finished devices with ISO 13485 systems, white room, class 7 and 8 clean rooms.
