Some workers have been picketing Westmoreland Plastics Inc., charging that the Latrobe, Pa.-based company is trying to break the union there, according to local media reports.
Westmoreland, an injection and compression molder, and its parent, Latrobe Associates Inc., voluntarily filed in December for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to documents sent to the National Labor Relations Board.
The company reportedly laid off its 14 union workers. When it recalled five workers recently, a union official said the company failed to honor its contract to rehire according to seniority, the local reports said.
Bob Wagner, president of the International Union of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America Local 88667, was not available for comment Dec. 19. A person who answered the phone at Westmoreland said she was the only person in the office.
Westmoreland manufactures thermoset components for medical devices, appliances, sensors, electrical distribution equipment and the aerospace industry.
The company has been operating more than 50 years.
