The first five months of 2024 showed mixed results for per-share stock prices of materials stocks tracked by Plastics News.
Six of those 11 firms had higher stock prices in early trading May 23 than they did on Jan. 1. Cabot Corp., a leading supplier of carbon black additives and concentrates, had seen the largest percentage gain in that period, with its per-share price up more than 21 percent.
Per-share prices at Westlake Corp., Avient Corp.. Dow Inc. and Eastman Chemical Co. were up 4-12 percent in the same comparison. Prices at Huntsman Corp. were up less than 1 percent.
The five firms showing lower per-share prices in that comparison were Trinseo (down 61 percent), AdvanSix Inc. (down 22 percent), Chemours Co. (down 13 percent), Hexcel Corp. (down 4 percent) and Celanese Corp. (down less than 1 percent).
In broader economic measures, the Dow Jones Industrial Average in late trading May 23 was up 4 percent since Jan. 1. The broader S&P 500 is up almost 11 percent in that period.
