Compounding firm Star Plastics LLC has launched new PFAS-free polycarbonate compounds.
Ravenswood, W. Va.-based Star has one PFAS-free PC material in its Orion-brand engineering resins line and another in its reNova-brand recycled resins portfolio. PFAS materials — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are being phased out because of possible health risks.
In a news release, Star CEO Daniel McMullen said the new products "address the rapidly evolving regulatory and environmental landscape in the plastics industry." He added that "by giving molders options in the materials they process, they can have a greater impact on preserving the environment and meeting their sustainability goals."
Star officials said the new product formulations are the first in a new category of products for the firm. Existing products carry Underwriter's Laboratories 94 flame retardant ratings of V0, V2 and HB. Compounds with additional UL ratings are in development.
"We envision this product category growing and we're currently formulating products for other material grades and end uses," technical manager Bob Powers said. He added that this work fits in with Star's origin as a post-industrial recycler, its reNova line with content validated by UL and its rating by EcoVadis, a major provider of business sustainability ratings.
"We are committed to making a difference by supplying a diversified set of sustainable compounds," he added.
Star does compounding work in polycarbonate, ABS and other engineering resins, with a focus on flame-retardant grades. In addition to custom compounding, the firm offers toll compounding services. Star operates two plants in West Virginia and also has licensing and production partnerships in China.
