The United Nations plastics treaty will affect the entire plastics industry, not just manufacturers of single-use plastics, according to a panel of experts.
In the Oct. 8 Plastics News Live, officials covered topics including extended producer responsibility, chemicals of concern, the importance of recycling and the shift in the U.S. position on resin production limits.
While most of the focus has been on single-use plastics, two of the speakers agreed that the debate includes durable products too, especially regarding chemicals of concern and potential caps on virgin resin production.
Speakers said the treaty is an opportunity to accelerate the industry’s shift to circularity.
The treaty is approaching its fifth and final planned negotiation session, with the next session in late November in South Korea.
