AMSOIL Industrial Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil reduces energy consumption
AMSOIL Industrial Certified Lubrication Specialist Jim Pezoldt worked with a large plastics company to identify opportunities to improve their overall manufacturing efficiency. Their primary facility has more than 20 similar blow-molding machines.
“The problem this customer experienced in their facility is actually extremely common,” said Pezoldt. “Operating hydraulic equipment with monograde hydraulic oil does not allow for additional efficiencies that could be achieved with a multi-viscosity synthetic hydraulic oil.”
Pezoldt conducted a field test on the company’s Hesta Graham* HLD700 blow-molding machine to identify the potential energy savings that could be achieved by replacing their existing monograde hydraulic oil with AMSOIL Industrial Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil.
“We drained and refilled the existing ISO 68 monograde hydraulic oil according to standard procedure,” said AMSOIL Industrial Sr. Product Development Engineer Kat Guillen. “After being refilled with fresh oil, baseline energy consumption was recorded using an AEMC* PEL 103 electric logger installed on the 33.5-hp Leroy Somer* LS180LR-T three-phase motor, running a Voith* Turbo IPV 5-50 101 gear pump.”
After a total production runtime of 278 hours, the monograde oil was drained and replaced with AMSOIL Industrial ISO 68 Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil. Electricity consumption was again recorded with the new oil and the same logger for an additional production runtime of more than 278 hours.
After completing an equivalent number of production hours on both oils, the average power consumption was compared using continuous 24-hour production runs that were representative of the entire dataset collected for each oil. All other variables were identical, including the product being manufactured, to ensure hydraulic oil was the only differentiating factor for the duration of the trial.
The results were impressive. Average power consumption over a continuous 24-hour production run for the monograde hydraulic oil was 2.77kW higher, which equates to AMSOIL Industrial Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil reducing energy use by 13.7%** — a simple and cost-effective solution.
“By switching to AMSOIL Industrial Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil sitewide, the company could save more than 332,400 kWh and $27,360 in energy costs annually**,” Pezoldt added. “And the company will benefit even more from superior wear protection that helps reduce expensive equipment failure and maintenance downtime.”
Switching to AMSOIL Industrial Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil can help your operation become more energy and cost efficient by reducing varnish and improving system cleanliness, equipment performance and reliability. It also maintains viscosity in extreme temperatures, reducing warm-up times, pressure spikes and erratic operation, while extending oil life and reducing maintenance downtime.
