When diplomats, environmental groups and the plastics industry next meet to negotiate a possible global plastics treaty, expect more discussions about the potential for fees on some resins.
During the most recent round of negotiations in Busan, South Korea, two different proposals were put forward for resin fees, says Steve Toloken, Plastics News assistant managing editor, who attended the talks.
As part of the Plastics in Politics Live webinar Dec. 11, Toloken noted that the idea isn’t to punish resin makers, but to potentially raise money needed to establish waste collection and recycling infrastructure in developing countries.
