Samantha Cronin studied marketing and communications at Michigan State University and now works as the communications director for Asahi Kasei.
Under her role, she manages the company's communications functions, including internal, external, digital, events and creative. Cronin is responsible for standardizing the communications processes between the regional business units, leading crisis communications efforts to develop and maintain plans, establishing multichannel communications strategies for diverse audiences, and managing large-scale events representing the Asahi Kasei brand.
Her first position in the manufacturing field was with Dart Container. She started at Asahi Kasei Plastics North America as a communications specialist before becoming its marketing communications manager, then transitioned to Asahi Kasei America's marketing communications manager and now communications director.
"I enjoyed working in manufacturing and plastics because of the diversity in responsibilities. You're working with plant employees, sales, office staff, etc., and there is always work to be done. The plastics field is open to new ideas, and the people within the industry are all close-knit," she said.
Cronin helped the company's leadership develop a global strategy regarding the North American business units and visited the Japan headquarters, using the project for a wider view on the company strategy and deeper insight of its goals. "Just being able to support and be present in conversations that affected an entire region and had a global impact was an amazing experience," she said.
"Someone once told me if taking a new opportunity doesn't scare you, then it is probably not worth taking. If you always push your boundaries or comfort, you will continue to grow and reach the goal you want," Cronin said.
Cronin has worked hard to earn her responsibilities and opportunities, and now she is using those experiences to grow her team while being more strategic, which includes "continuously pushing the boundaries of what is expected."
"I strive to show that it is possible to have a fulfilling career in a demanding industry, demonstrating that dedication, skill and vision are the true determinants of success," she said.
"Plastics may not seem like the 'most appealing' industry, but it is a rewarding one," she added. "There is so much to learn and most … people have been part of the industry for several years. There are always opportunities, and it is more stable than other industries such as tech, etc.; that is why I think people stick around."
